Soft tissue coverage in hand; role of posterior interosseous flap.

The posterior interosseous artery and its several cutaneous branches permit the surgeon to obtain an island flap of the dorsal forearm based on the distal anastomosis, between the two interosseous arteries at the distal part of the forearm, it can reliably be transferred to different skin defects of the hand such as those created by correction of an adduction contracture of the first web space, or on the Palmer and dorsal aspect of the hand. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the role of posterior interosseous flap for soft tissue coverage in hand. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Orthopaedic Unit, Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur. PERIOD: Oct 1994 to Dec 1998. MATERIAL & METHODS: The procedure has been employed in sixteen patients, 14 males and 2 females with age range of 4-48 years. RESULTS: Good results in 12 patients, satisfactory in 2 and 2 with poor results regarding to our criteria. CONCLUSION: Posterior interosseous island flap is recommended to cover the soft tissue defects over the dorsal side, palmer side and in the Ist web space of the hand.
