Estimation of serum lipids in albino Rats fed on palm oil and atherogenic diet and Nigella sativa.
Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;14(3):121-4.

Seventy-two albino rats were selected for this study and divided into 6 groups of 12 animals with equal number of male and female in - each. Fourteen days after acclimatization to the environment and basal diet, fasting blood samples (zero week) collected by heart puncture under either anaesthesia or after sacrifice and experimental diets were started which were continued for 24 weeks. Serum lipid profile was (lone using enzymatic colorimetric methods. The estimations of serum lipids showed total cholesterol and in HDL-C concentrations in groups fed on palm oil (PO) diet. Niegella Sativa (NS) diets significantly decreased serum total cholesterol and LDL-C while HDL-c was raised but non-significantly. Thus, NS might prevent deposition of lipids in tissues preventing tendency to obesity and atherogenesis by decreasing LDL-c serum. It is presumed that NS produces antihyperlipidemic and antiobesity effect by decreasing LDL-c level significantly and enhancing HDL-C in significantly.
