Anatomic failure after Scleral Buckling.
Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;14(3):134-6.

Purpose: To evaluate the causes of anatomical failure after scleral buckling procedure. Method and Material: This prospective study was conducted in the eye department of FJMC/SGRH Lahore. All the cases were admitted through OPD and underwent primary scleral buckling procedure to correct reghmatogenous retinal detachment. Results: 24 eyes showed retinal reattachment after primary buckling procedure while 12 eyes developed recurrence. In failed eyes 58.4 % failure was due to proliferative vitreoretinopathy while 33.3 % and 8.3% of the failure was due to missed/iatrogenic breaks and retinal incarceration respectively. Conclusion: We inferred that pathological events going in the vitreous cavity after reghmatogenous retinal detachment do play a role in the recurrence. Hence it is very important to assess the grade of proliferative vitreoretinopathy and localization of all the breaks prior to surgery. Sound surgical technique also plays a pivotal role to avoid failure recurrence.
