Comparison of Intraocular Pressure Between Normal and Ocular Hypertensive Women During Various Phases of the Menstrual Cycle.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;4(1-2):39-43.

In ocular hypertensive subjects, relationship of intraocular pressure (IOP) with various days of the menstrual cycle has never been described, while in normal subjects findings are not consistent. Therefore, after taking into account all IOP affecting factors, this study investigated whether in normal and ocular hypertensive women, any relation between days of the menstrual cycle and variations in IOP exists or not. Moreover, it was also investigated if IOP changes were related to heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, age, weight, hemoglobin and plasma osmolarity. Intraocular pressure and the concentrations of circulating hormones, namely luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), progesterone, and testosterone of normal and ocular hypertensive women of the same age groups were recorded daily during first month and then after every fourth day of the cycle, through three consecutive cycles. It was observed that although, the intraocular pressure values differed in each of the subjects at various times of the cycle, they did not definitely correlate with the different phases of menstrual cycle over the course of three consecutive cycles. In both, normal and ocular hypertensive subjects, IOP fluctuated between 1 and 5 mmHg. This study concludes that various days of the menstrual cycle, both in normal and ocular hypertensive women, had no definite influence on intraocular pressure. Against the expectation, this study failed to find higher fluctuations in intraocular pressure in ocular hypertensive subjects than in normal subjects. The fluctuations in IOP appeared to be independent of heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, age, weight, hemoglobin and plasma osmolarity.
