Commonly encountered respiratory pathogens and their sensitivity in hospitalized patients.

Sputum culture and sensitivity was performed on the patients suffering from respiratory tract infections admitted in Medical Unit 1, Jinnah Hospital, Lahore during months of November to February 1999-2000. A total of 43 patients were subjected to the study with a sex breakup of 31 males and 12 females. 14 of these were new cases while 29 were already suffering from chronic respiratory ailments and had presented with the exacerbations caused by the respiratory tract infections. 4 patients developed respiratory tract infection during their stay at the hospital. Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Haemophilus Influenzae, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Staphylococcus Aureus and Klebsiella were found to be the commonest respiratory tract pathogens and Ampicillin, Cephalexin, Amikacin and Lincomycin emerged as the antibiotics against whom these pathogens have developed most resistance.
