Evaluation of etiological incidence and diagnostic modalities in obstructive Jaundice.

Obstructive jaundice is a frequently encountered condition in the surgical wards. This study was conducted in order to ascertain the various causes of obstructive jaundice in our set up and to objectively evaluate the relative usefulness of available diagnostic modalities and compare the results with current literature. Ninety-seven consecutive patient presenting to two surgical units of services Hospital, Lahore with obstructive jaundice from January 2000 to August 2001. Biochemical tests were followed by USG in all patients. Further imaging techniques were used selectively. Thirty-four patients (35%) suffered from a benign etiology while 63 (65%) had a malignant lesion. The serum bilirubin and serum alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly higher (P<0.05) in patients with a malignant etiology. The sensitivity and specificity of each diagnostic modality for various etiologies are calculated and compared with current literature.
