Role of Endorectal Ultrasonographic (ERUS) and CT scan abdomen in preoperative evaluation of Carcinoma Rectum.
Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;12(1):5-8.

This study was undertaken to assess the role of endorectal ultrasonography (ERUS) and CT abdomen and pelvis in the pre-operative evaluation and staging of carcinoma rectum. Over a period of 18 months, 11 patients with rectal carcinoma were evaluated by comparing investigative findings with operative and histopathology results. The parameters .for comparison included tumor site, depth of tumor invasion, mesorectal and lateral. Lymphatic involvement and distant metastases CT Scan and EROS were found to be both 100% accurate for tumour site, 50% and 87.3% for depth of invasion, 85.7% and 71.4% for mesorectal lymph adenopathy, 25% and 75% for lateral spread and 100% and 0`% accurate for distant metastases respectively. Conclusion was drawn that to date CT and ERUS in our country should be considered complementary, because of ERUS being relatively new in our setup and still in a phase of evolution.
