Serum Immunoglobulin levels in patients with Non-Hodgkin`s Lymphoma.
Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;13(3):114-9.

Non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma (NHL) appears to represent tumors of immune system and one of function of immune system is secretion and production of immunoglobulin molecules. The immunoglobulin production is dependent upon normal B-and T-cell interactions and any derangement in their function can be crudely evaluated by measuring serum immunoglobulin levels. It follows that some abnormality can be detected in patients suffering from NHL and if any abnormality is continuously found to be related with some specific histologic type of NHL lymphoma, it might provide some insight into the understanding of pathophysiology of such disorders. Thus serum immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA, IgM) levels in 32 newly diagnosed patients of NHL who had not received any specific therapy were measured by immunoturbidimetric method and compared with that of age and sex matched 20 normal healthy control subjects. The mean serum IgG and IgM concentration was found to be highly significantly (p < 0.001) raised in NHL patients while serum IgA concentration was found to be comparable with that of control subjects. The mean serum concentration of IgM was found to be highly significantly raised (p < 0.001) in both diffuse large cell and diffuse small cell NHL while the mean serum IgG concentration was found to be significantly raised (p < 0.01) in diffuse large cell and highly significantly raised (p < 0.001) in diffuse small cell NHL. There was no case of IgA and IgM hypogammaglobulinemia while IgG hypogammaglobulinemia was found in 15.62% patients of non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma.
