Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;12(3):126-9.

To evaluate the role of vaginal prostaglandin tablets for inducing labour in the presence of ripe cervix. Methods: This study was carried out on 245 patients in the department of gynecology and obstetrics at Lady Aitchison Hospital from 1st February 2000 to 30th March 2001. All these patients were recruited for induction of labour with a bishop score greater than 5. Two groups were formed. 1. Study group having 125 patients all receiving vaginal prostaglandins. 2. Control group having 120 patients all having artificial rupture of membranes. In all these groups the following points were recorded: Labour duration, Oxytocin requirement, Analgesia requirement, Mode of delivery, Complication, Confinement. Results: Average duration of labor in parous patients is shorter in study group (198 minutes versus 324 minutes) as compared to primigravidas. Oxytocin was used in 69% of primigravidas and 33% in multiparas in study group as compared to 93% and 72% in controls. Analgesia requirements and instrumental delivery rates were also reduced. Conclusion: Use of vaginal PGE2 tablets in the presence of ripe cervix shortens first stage of labor and reduces oxytocin and analgesia requirements and chances of instrumental delivery.
