Laryngotracheo-Bronchial foreign bodies an experience at Nawabshah.

A total of 300 cases of foreign bodies in the laryngotracheo bronchial tree, managed over a period of six years (January 1992 to Sept 2002), at Peoples Medical Hospital, Nawabshah were analysed. Majority of cases were males (62.70%) and (37.30%) were females and belonged to (83.8%)first decade of life. Betel-nuts (57,84%) and plastic whistles (12,43%) were commonest offending agents, followed by peanuts (11.35%), gram seeds (5.41%), peas (4.33%). While beads and some other rare foreign bodies recovered wee (8.64%). Dyspnea of varying degrees was the commonest presentation preceded by choking sensation and cough followed by intermittent dyspnea and cyanosis. Six cases presented with whistling sounds during coughing and while taking deep breath. Majority of patients presented within 24 hours of inhalation of foreign body. All the patients were treated by endoscopic removal with rigid ventilating bronchoscopes under general anesthesia. Support of experienced anesthetist remained mandatory. Right main bronchus was the commonest site of lodgment, followed by left main bronchus, trachea and larynx.
