Transurethral Ureteroscopic Retrieval of Ureteric Stones an Alternative to Open Ureterolithotomy.
Biomedica Jan ;14:66-70.

Ureteric surgery has undergone a revolutionary change since the introduction of ureterorenoscope for endoscopic management of ureteric stones. This randomized comparative study was conducted at a teaching hospital to observe the prospects and complications of transurethral ureteroscopic retrieval of ureteric stones in comparison with open ureterolithotomy. Sixty patients of ureteric calculi from both sexes between the age of 20-50-years were managed surgically in two groups A and B, open ureterolithotomy and transurethral ureteroscopic retrieval. Both groups were compared for time consumed for surgery, stone clearance, post operative hospital stay and complications. Results showed significant superiority of group B over group A as regards time consumed, hospital stay and complication rate. Our success rate, 8333%, with group B was quite encouraging and comparable with other reports. So it is concluded that endourological treatment of ureteric calculi consumes shorter time duration for surgery, has decreased post operative hospital stay leading to cost effectiveness and low complication rate in lower 2 / 3 of ureter. It certainly needs expertise.
