Immunocytochemical Analysis of Estrogen Receptors on Fine Needle Aspirates of Mammary Carcinoma.

Fine needle aspiration cytology smears from 31 cases of carcinoma of the breast were stained immunocytochemically for oestrogen receptors and compared with paraffin sections. It showed a high degree of specificity (91.7%) and sensitivity of (94.7%). This study indicates that oestrogen receptor status can be carried out reliably on tine needle aspiration cytology smears.
