J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;11(2):21-3.

This retrospective study was conducted in Yeomen and Children Hospital Abbottabad in 19971998, with the objective of determining the influence of improved antenatal-care and intrapartum management on maternal complications related with twin pregnancies. We had 3139 deliveries, out of which there were 44 cases of twin pregnancy. Only 11 were booked cases, the rest were received via emergency with complications. This showed the lack of awareness of importance of regular antenatal check tips and early detection of complications and hence timely treatment. The incidence of preterm labor was 20.3% while premature rupture of membranes was seen in 11.4% of the cases. Pre-eclampsia developed in 15.8%, while eclampsia in 6.81%. Twin to twin transfusion syndrome was found in 9.1%, placenta praevia in 6.8%, Abruptio placenta 2.2% and IUGR in 6.8% of cases. The incidence of complications was found to decrease with improved antenatal care and intrapartum management.
