J Surg Jan ;19-20:22-4.

As erectile dysfunction is quite common , upto 52% as evident by Massachusetts male 1 aging study so we conducted this study to find out the prevalence of erectile dysfunction in patients coming to surgical wards and OPD. The study was conducted in married and unmarried people with regular sex partners in the age range of 20-79 years in the Surgical department of Mayo Hospital, Lahore. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction was found to be 31.4% in surgical departments which tallies with the prevalence in the other medical disciplines. As the prevalence of erectile dysfunction is 31.4% in surgical patients and is associated with a number of systemic illnesses and surgical treatments, a wide range of doctors must be aware of the condition in their patients Both doctors and public need to be better informed about erectile dysfunction and its treatment. CONCLUSION: The likelihood of erectile dysfunction increases progressively with age but is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Other age related conditions increase the likelihood of its occurrence. Contrary to present public and professional opinion , many cases of erectile dysfunction can be successfully managed with appropriately selected therapy. Education of physicians and other health professionals in aspects of human sexuality is currently inadequate, and curriculum development is urgently needed. These facts have been shown by another study done at Mayo Hospital Lahore suggesting new measures to tackle this taboo issue in a scientific and appropriate way.13 Important information on improvement of our understanding of the appropriate diagnostic assessments and treatments of this condition. Erectile dysfunction is an important public health problem deserving of increased support for basis science investigation and applied research. As surgical treatments, a wide rate of doctors must be aware of the condition in their patients.
