What`s new in HIV?.
Infect Dis J Jan ;14(2):45-50.

HIV research remains one of the fastest moving fields in science and medicine. From being a completely untreatable and uniformly fatal virus infection with almost taboo status it has become much less feared in the Western world due to the notable successes of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). Treatment guidelines for HAART are now being standardised1. For a patient on treatment the original predicted time span from infection to disease (AIDS) of around 10 years is most likely doubled now and this window gives time for further therapies to be developed. In the developing world the picture is much less favourable due to incomplete access to HAART and lack of infrastructure needed to administer and monitor therapy. In this review I will describe some of the advances in understanding the biology of the virus which have occurred in recent years. It is clear that despite the successes, the battle against AIDS is far from over. New treatments are still urgently required. This is a review article.
