Role of Octreotide in Management of Acute Pancreatitis.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;13(1-2):0-.

This study was done to evaluate the role of Octreotide in the management of acute pancreatitis. 49 patients with acute pancreatitis admitted in surgical units from Jan. 01, 1997 to Dec. 31, 1998 were included in this study. All these patients were managed with standard protocol and were given Octreotide (50 mg s/c b.d) for 07 days. Its response was evaluated in respect of complications, pain control, hospital stay and outcome. Overall complication rate was 34.7%, mortality rate was 8.2% (4/49), average hospital stay was 12.7 days, mean score on Ranson`s Criteria was 2.1 (0-9). Octreotide reduced the local complication rate, the clinical need for analgesic drug administration and shortened hospitalization. However, its effect on mortality rate is questionable.
