The Association of Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Hepatitis B and C Viruses.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;12(1-2):0-.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been found to be associated with hepatitis B and C viruses. We studied our patients with HCC to assess this correlation. The sera from 30 patients with histologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were tested for HBsAg, and anti-HCV by ELISA technique to ascertain the evidence of infection due to hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) respectively. Twenty three (76.6%) out of 30 expressed seropositivity for hepatitis C virus, while 6 (20%) were positive for HBsAg. Both HBsAg and anti-HCV were present in (2 (6.6%) patients and in 1 (3.3%), no serological marker was detected. This data indicates that HCV plays a major role in the causation of HCC, as compared with HBV. Moreover in these patients underlying cirrhosis was present in 26 patients (86%) while 4 were (13.3%) non-cirrhotics.
