Reference values for serum calcium.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;15(2):49-53.

Quantitation and interpretation of calcium require well-established reference values. We lack consensus on definite reference range of calcium for our population and we have to follow those reported from abroad. So there is a requirement to establish reference range for our population for correct interpretation of calcium related disorders. A study was carried out in Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Rawalpindi, in accordance with recent recommendations by National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) of USA. This study comprised of 170 healthy individuals. The serum specimens were analyzed for calcium, using O-cresolphthalein complexone method, on automated chemistry analyzer. The reference range obtained was 2.03-2.55 mmol/I (Mean 2.29) after correction of serum calcium for albumin. The lower limit of reference range obtained in our study is comparatively low as compared to studies conducted in other parts of the world. There is a need for multicentric study to confirm this finding, so that a consensus on reference range of serum calcium is obtained.
