This study was carried out to assess the amount of hydrogen exhaled in subjects suspected to have lactose intolerance, and to evaluate using this method as a screening tool for lactose intolerance. The study setting was Clinical Laboratory, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Patients suspected to have lactose intolerance were sent to the Clinical Laboratory by their respective physicians for a breath hydrogen analysis and subsequently the breath samples were collected and analyzed for their hydrogen content. Normal breath hydrogen values were found in 48.4%, 39.6% had mild to moderately raised values and 12.6% had grossly elevated values. It is concluded that this test is simple, non invasive, rapid and has a high positivity rate among the sample population.
