Gleason grading of prostate adenocarcinoma and its correlation with age.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;15(3):121-5.

To study Gleason grading of prostate carcinoma was studied and compared with results of previous researchers, as this system has become the international standard for grading of prostate cancer as well as a strong prognostic marker. This was a retrospective study of 50 patients suffering from prostate adenocarcinoma. Basic Medical Sciences Institute, Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center Karachi Pakistan. Fifty patients between the age of 50-85 years were selected from period 1990-2001 suffering from prostate adenocarcinoma According to recent study Gleason score was grouped in three categories. Sixteen of 50 (32%), well differentiated tumours Gleason score 2-4, thirty of 50(60%) moderately differentiated tumours Gleason score 5-7, and four of 50(8%) poorly differentiated tumours Gleason score 8-10 were demonstrated. No significant correlation was observed between Gleason score and age of patient. It is concluded that majority of tumours were moderately differentiated tumours, with Gleason grade 5-7 (60%), indicating that prostate cancer is an aggressive disease. Based on theses findings it is recommended that Gleason score (Sum of primary and secondary) be employed in all biopsies and prostatectomies.
