Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) Findings in Proven Cases of Carcinoma Prostate.

A prospective study was conducted in Department of Urology, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. The aim of study was to record the findings of TRUS in proven cases of carcinoma prostate. Twenty-five (25) patients of age 55 years and above with biopsy proven carcinoma of prostate were included in this study. They were evaluated with history, physical examination and TRUS. Transrectal ultrasound revealed erosion of prostatic capsule and more than 7mm focal defects in the peripheral zone of prostate in 19(76%) patients. Less than 7mm focal defects were present in two (8%) patients. Four patients (10%a) had more than 7mm foci in the central zone of prostate gland. In five (20%) cases seminal vesicles were eroded by carcinoma of the prostate. From this study it is concluded that TRUS is helpful in evaluation of local spread of carcinoma of prostate.
