Prevalence of Ischemic Heart Disease in Diabetes Mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) among persons with diabetes mellitus. MATERIAL & METHODS: This prospective study was conducted in medicine and cardiology wards, Chandka Medical College Hospital Larkana from March 2002 to March 2003 on 50 cases of diabetes mellitus, irrespective of age, sex and duration of diabetes mellitus. RESULTS: According to this study, 16 (32%) out of 50 cases had JHD, 04 (33%) out of 12 were females and 12 (31%) out of 38 were male cases. All IHD cases were found in DM type-2 and they all were above the age of 40 years. CONCLUSION: Large proportion of persons with DM type-2 are suffering from preventable IHD which suggest family physicians role for the importance of good glycaemic control, early monitoring for risk factors and assessing cardiac status on more regular basis.
