Infective (non viral) complications of double lumen hemodialysis catheter in renal failure patients.
Med Channel Jan ;11(2):46-8.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate frequency, type of infection and sensitivity of microorganism of this study was to know the frequency, type of infection and sensitivity of micro organism after insertion of Double Lumen Hemodialysis Catheter in renal failure patients. DESIGN AND SETTING: Design of study was prospective, and conducted at Ism University Hospital Hyderabad from 21-10-2003 – 01-09 -2004. SUBJECT AND METHODS: Jn this period, total of 50 cases were studied, having either Acute Renal failure 10 patients (20%) or end stage renal failure 40 patients (80%) requiring dialysis, and therefore entry of Double lumen dialysis catheter. The catheter tips, blood and pus were cultured. Antibiotics sensitivity was also seen. RESULTS: Out of 50 patients studied 15 patients (30%) were found to have infection. Among infection group 12 patients (80%) out of total 15 patients were having infection because of grain positive cocci, and 3 patients (20%) were having gram negative infection. The frequency of infection is more when femoral vein is used (76.9%). All gram positive cocci (100%) were sensitive to vancomycin, and all grain negative bacillus ( 100%) were sensitive to imepenem. These were also sensitive to other antibiotics but in less frequency. CONCLUSION: Jnfection is common (30%) in these patients and more commonly by gram positive cocci (80%). Insertion of femoral vein having highest chances of infection (76.9%)
