Mortality rate in a general medical unit.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the Mortality rate in a General Medical unit and variation in mortality with relevance to age, sex and disease. METHODS: All Patients admitted in a Medical Unit of Civil Hospital Karachi were included in this study over a period of two years. Patients with definite clinical diagnosis supported with the laboratory data were included in this study. RESULT: Out of 1743 patients admitted during this period 210 Patients died due to various diseases with total mortality of 12.05%. I Male Patients died out of 1084 male admissions and 99 female patients died out of 654 female admissions. Mortality rate were 4.74% to 6.20% in patients below the age 40 years and 16.20% to 19.74% in Patients above the age of 40 years. Liver diseases and Fulminant Hepatitis account 71 deaths and Cerebrovascular diseases account 45 deaths. CONCLUSION: Mortality rate is high: It is significantly higher in women compared to men. Mortality rate rises steadily with increasing age .Liver diseascs and Cerebrovascular diseases were the leading causes of death in our unit.
