Management of left colonic injuries, "Primary repair is safe and cost effective".

OBJECTIVE: To know about the safety of primary repair in the management of left colonic injuries. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, observational study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted in Saidu Group of Teaching Hospitals from March 2001 to Feb 2003. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Total of 45 patients were included in the study, fulfilling the criteria. All these patients were managed by primary repair Those patients who were not fulfilling the. criteria were submitted to stomal diversion. The morbidity and mortality were recorded. RESULTS: Would infection was observed very frequently, 12 patients (26.6%). 5 patients (11.1%) developed wound dehiscence and I patient (2.3%) got burst abdomen. 5 patients (11.1%) developed intra peritoneal abscess. 3 patients (6.6%) developed leakage and one out of them died. Hence the morality was 2.3% in our study. CONCLUSION: Primary repair in the management of left colonic injuries should he recommended in selected cases.
