Evaluation of Risk Factors of Incisional Hernia.

Incisional hernia is an important complication of abdominal surgery. This study was conducted on 52 patients evaluation at Peoples Medical College Hospital NawabShah from January 1996 to December 2000, in which generally accepted risk factors for developing the primary incisional hernia were evaluated. In this study male to female ratio was 1:3, 42 patients had initial surgical procedure in emergency and 10 were operated on elective list. 9 (17.31 %) cases were obese, 6 (11.54%) had history of raised intra-abdominal pressure (Chronic cough, Chronic constipation, Prostatism), 34 (65.38%) cases had evidence of wound infection. 47 (90.38%) cases had vertical incisions [Midline 38 (73.01 %), Para median 9(17.31 %)j and 5 (9.62%) cases had other incisions (Kocher`s, Gridiron and Transverse). Absorbable sutures were used in 39 (75%) cases and non-absorbable (Proline) were found in 13 (25%).
