Injection sclerotherapy in the treatment of rectal prolapse in children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the role of injection sclerotherapy in the treatment of rectal prolapse in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted in the department of pediatric surgery Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar from March 2001 to February 2002. Those children who failed to respond to conservative treatment were included in the study. RESULTS: The total number of children included in the study was 152. Those treated with single injection were 135 (88.8%); those who needed two injections were 9 (5.9%) and 8 (5.2%) needed three injections with almost nil complications. CONCLUSION: Injection sclerotherapy is simple and effective way of treatment for rectal prolapse in children with very minimal complications.
