Clinico epidemiological profile of one hundered AFB smear positive cases of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Objectives: To review the epidemiological factors associated with high prevalence of tuberculosis and to study their clinical profile. Methods: It was a prospective study. One hundred AFB smear positive cases were selected from the indoor patients department of chest medicine of Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Results: Out of 100 cases there were 67% of male 33% of females, 55% of the cases has large family size of 6-10 family members living in one room, 70% of the cases had one bed room,80% one bath room and 10% of cases has no facility of bath room .regarding other risk factor 36% were smokers and 28 of thee cases had obvious history of contact. Delay in seeking medical advice for more than 60 days were seen in quite significant number of cases 36% of male and 57% of female, 37% of cases of previous history of TB. Out of them 25% were defaulters and 12% cases who completed the treatment showed relapse. Conclusion: Various risk factors evaluated shows an association with disease. The delay in seeking medical advice and default rate is quite significant.
