Objective: To correlate FAB and WHO classifications in patients of MDS. Design: A prospective, descriptive study. Setting: Pakistan institute of medical sciences, Islamabad Materials and Methods: Forty six consecutive cases of MDS diagnosed as MDS were classified according to FAB as well as WHO criteria. The clinical and laboratory data were also evaluated. Results: According to FAB criteria, RA was the commonest type, followed by RARS, RAEB and CMML, respectively. Amongst the WHO types, RCMD was the most frequent type, followed by RA, RCMD-RS, RAEB-1, RAEB-2 and RARS, respectively Conclusion: In our setup, FAB as well as WHO classifications of MDS are equally well applicable. Cytogenetic studies in these patients , if available, can further improve our understanding of this disease.
