Medications for migraine prophylaxis and diets triggering Migraine – An evidence based approach.

Migraine is a common condition which may lead to severe disability. A number of strategies are available for patients requiring preventive therapy. Effective prophylactic medicines include propranolol, timolol, amitriptyline and valproic acid. Of the newer agents, topiramate and gabapentin have been found to be effective. The studies reviewed in this article, did not find conclusive evidence regarding reduction in migraine headaches by reducing chocolate, caffeine or vasoactive amines. On the other hand, riboflavin and magnesium supplementation and low fat diet were found to be effective.
