Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;1(4):227-9.

Background: In Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) the spectrum of clinical disease varies from asymptomatic elevation of liver enzymes to fibrosis and nodular regeneration. NASH is frequently associated with diabetes mellitus. Objective: To look into the frequency of NASH in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (2 DM). Setting: This study was conducted in Medical Unit 1 of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad during the year 2004. Material and Method: A total of 30 consecutive cases of type 2 DM, who showed an ultrasonographic evidence of fatty liver were subjected to liver biopsy and were looked into for histological evidence of NASH. Results: Age of patients ranged from 35-70 years with a mean +/- SD of 52.12 +/- 8.52 years. Female:male ratio was 2.75:1. Serum ALT Levels varied between 28 and 98 u/l with a mean +/- SD of 43.63 +/- 10.76 u/l. Histologically, steatotic manifestations, invariably accompanied by inflammatory changes of variable degree, were observed in 56.7% of cases. Conclusions: NASH was observed in 56.7% of patients of type 2 DM who give an ultrasonographic evidence of fatty liver. Females were affected much more commonly as compared to males. Mean age of these patients was 52.12 yrs.
