Background: Most encephaloceles can be diagnosed on routine antenatal anomaly scans. Objective: To find out the frequency of encephalocele on antenatal scanning. Patients and Methods: The study was carried out at the radiology department of maternal and child health center of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences over a period of one year i.e. 2003. All the patients referred to MCH radiology for antenatal ultrasound were included in the study. In a total of 4155 cases subjected to ultrasound during the period of study, four were diagnosed to have encephalocele. Results: The frequency of encephalocele in this study turned out to be 0.09%. Two of the four cases of encephalocele were found to have other sonologically diagnosed anomalies. The earliest diagnosed case was at the gestational age of 19 weeks and the latest at 27 weeks. Amniotic fluid index was normal in all except one case for which adequate record regarding amniotic fluid was missing. All the cases in this study were found to have occipital meningocele. Conclusion: The study shows the frequency of encephalocele to be slightly higher than that found in international literature.
