Recto-Sigmoid Carcinoma Presenting as Haemorrhoids.

Occasionally rectosigmoid carcinoma present as haemorrholds distally. So it Is important to rule out carcinoma before proceeding to surgery for haemorrhoids. This study was done to find out incidence of proximal recto-sigmoid carcinoma in cases clinically diagnosed as haemorrhoids. In 92 patients presenting with bleeding per rectum which were clinically diagnosed as suffering from haemorrhoids; sigmoidoscopic examination was done In all cases. In 5 cases out of 92 (5.4%) proximal carcinoma was present. Out of these 5 cases; In 3 carcinoma was in the sigmoid-colon; in one at the junction of recto-sigmold and In one case in the rectum, which was diagnosed clinically by digital examination and was confirmed by biopsy. Histology of all malignant cases revealed adenocarcinoma. It is recommended that any patient undergoing haemorrhoidectomy, prior sigmoidoscopy and or barium enema in mandatory to exclude proximal carcinoma which may be missed otherwise.
