Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Awareness among Students of Degree Colleges for Boys at Islamabad.

A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted to determine the level of AIDS awareness among male students of degree colleges at Islamabad, 500 students with average age of 17 years from 1st 2nd and 4th year were interviewed. 31.6% of students belong to uneducated mothers, while 952% student`s fathers were literate. Majority, 236 (47.2%) of students belong to income per month group of Rs. 5000 to 10,000 and lived in urban areas, 333 (66.6%). 90.2% were aware of germs as cause of AIDS. More than 75% correctly know the sexual mode of transmission of disease including prostitution and more than 80% acknowledge the transmission through syringes, needles and blood. Similarly 70% of students correctly know that ordinary casual contact does not cause spread of disease, however about 50% do not appreciate the risk of sharing razors, toothbrushes, etc. 54% of students stated that preventive measures for AIDS are available. 80% of students pointed out TV as their best source of information about AIDS.
