Liver transplantation in the developing world.
Pak Paed J Jan ;29(4):167-9.

Liver transplantation (LT) has evolved tremendously since Starzls first attempt in 1963, which was followed four years later by the first successful pediatric LT in history. Since then, this complicated but life saving modality has undergone a tremendous revolution and in a consensus of 1983, the National Institutes of Health confirmed LT to be a valid procedure in cases of end stage liver disease. As LT has become an accepted modality for acute and chronic liver failure in the West with improved long-term (10-15 years) survival rates of more than 80%, patients from developing countries like India and Pakistan also seek to benefit from this procedure.
