Correction of post-polio residual ankle deformities by conventional methods.

Objective: To assess the outcome of Postpolio Ankle Deformities, corrected by conventional surgery. Design & Duration: Prospective descriptive study, carried out from Jan.2003 to Dec. 2004. Setting: Orthopaedic Unit I of Civil Hospital, Karachi. Patients: All patients who needed surgical intervention for Postpolio Ankle Deformities. Methodology: The data of all the patients was entered on a proforma and the results analyzed. Results: A total of 30 patients with postpolio ankle deformities who needed surgical intervention were included in this study. Amongst them 18 were male, while 12 were female. These deformities were commonly seen in the lower socio-economical group. Equines deformity was the most common whereas pes calcaneus was the least common deformity. Bony procedures were done in the skeletal mature patients. Conclusion: Conventional methods are less cumbersome, economical, needs less instrumentation and usually gives good results.
