Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension - Experience in 3275 Diabetic Patients.
Pak J Med Sci Jan ;17(1):11-4.

Objective: To study the effects of various variables of diabetes mellitus (DM) on hypertension (HTN). Design: All diabetic patients were studied during 1996-97 according to a standardized proforma to note the effects of various variables of DM on hypertension. Setting: Diabetic clinic (outdoor) of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. Subjects: 3275 diabetic patients registered in the Diabetic Clinic during 1996-97. Main Outcome Measures: Incidence of hypertension in different sub-groups of these diabetic patients. Results: Out of 3275 patients, 1402(42.8%) in total, (38.3% in male and 45.5% in female) were hypertensive. HTN was observed more frequently in obese (26.6% vs 48.2%), longer duration of DM (24.7 vs 63.2%) and poor glycemic control (26.9 vs 50.3%) with p<0.0001. HTN was unusual under age 20, afterwards incidence increased linearly in female patients (18.6% to 92.1%, p<0.0001) but not in males (36.7% to 45.6%, p<0.5). Conclusion: So variables like obesity, increasing age, poor glycemic control and longer duration of DM increase the incidence of HTN significantly in diabetic patients. Hence, requiring more effective and comprehensive treatment approach of the diabetes mellitus syndrome.
