Abdominal tuberculosis in children - A profile of 40 cases.

A prospective study was carried out at The Children`s hospital Lahore and Bahawal Victoria hospital Bahawalpur from January 1997 to December 2003, on the abdominal tuberculosis (TB) in children. A total of 40 cases with confirmed diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis on histopathology were studied. The male to female ratio was 1:2.07. Age ranged from 4 months to 15 years maximum number of cases were above 10 years of age. Most of the patients presented with acute abdomen. Radiological evidence of coexistent pulmonary tuberculosis was present in 37% of cases. ESR was raised in 72.50% of cases. Montoux test was positive in 78.03% of cases. Ultrasound and CT scan pointed towards the diagnosis in 90% and 88.88% of cases respectively. Thirty-eight patients were explored in this series. Intestinal tuberculosis (52.50%) was the commonest type seen. Histopathology was performed in all patients confirming the diagnosis with no false negative report. All the patients responded well to anti tuberculous drugs except three, who died, representing 7.5% mortality in this series.
