Re: situation in America?

As to my knowledge , steps in recent times has become more "hazardous". Many a slips between cup and lips. First a long hauled struggle for study and squeezing yourself through all three stages with quite good scores ( should be in 90s to get into good programmes) then visa issue is very big hurdle, which can be denied at any stage for mysterious reasons but no doubt lady luck counts a lot and for many it was never a problem and then there is "match" problem. you may have to wait for quite long time sometimes stretching into years before you can get that "Match" of your and their choice. of course US clinical experience, your cv , your research and your presentation and so many things go into broth for promising you a good residency programme. These days all this is becoming increasing competitive and try to foresee things well ahead of time. Imagine what will happen by the time you'll be " ripe" for applying to whole of America.According to recent reports medical colleges there are giving admissions to increasing number of students so in coming years they are likely to have more of their indigenous product to serve their markets making it all the more "tough". By no means i wanted to depress you. ppl are still doing it in loads and getting residencies too after carefully orchestrated and determined efforts but at the same time you should be mindful of ground realities all the time.
i hope it will help.
good luck.

Re: Re: situation in America?

I don't think that one gets an MD degree after passing USMLE. Degrees are granted by universities/colleges/medical schools. Neither ECFMG nor USMLE are degree granting institutions. These institutions are only to ensure that minimum standards are met.

Re: Re: situation in America?

Well, there are multiple factors as mentioned earlier. Main things are the USMLE scores, US clinical experience and your contacts practically speaking. You never know which thing helps you the best in order to obtain a residency. The most important thing which goes with you is your luck. Even if one gets residency, one wont be able to get the visa afterwards; you might have seen so many examples. Luck is the key; only Allah knows....... Should you have any question about steps or anything, dont hesitate to ask.

Re: situation in America?

It depends on a number of factors. Your scores, presentation of your application, visa status/green card, how you fare in your interview, experience in the US, your recommendation letters and the field that you seek. There are those who got residencies in first attempt and others who have applied year after year without success. Good luck.
