Macular Degeneration: Signs

Macular degeneration is a complex disorder that begins decades before a patient becomes symptomatic. In this disorder a molecular derangement can take place in or near Bruch’s membrane, leading to the growth of new blood vessels from the choriocapillaris. The vast majority of legal blindness due to this disease is from this neovascular complication. The diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration rests on signs in the macula, irrespective of visual acuity. Drusen are characteristic lesions located in both the macula and the peripheral retina, seen through the ophthalmoscope that range in color from white to yellow with a crystalline, glittering aspect. The main risk factors for the disease are smoking, exposure to light, and inflammation.
