Nephrology is one of the neglected fields in Pakistan. young graduates should come in this field

You are rite.... but the problem is the extremely limited no of seats and a few supervisors... As far as I know only 2 training institutes have been accredited for NEPHRO by CPSP in the whole of Punjab. One in LHR and the other one in ISL perhaps. Only 3 or so supervisors. I know of many of my senior colleagues who wish to join either NEPHRO or GASTRO but haven't been able to find a supervisor for the last 6 months or so...
2 of them have joined CARDIO @ PIC LHR and another joined NEURO.

Dear Usman
I am surprised to know that your seniors were unable to find a supervisor in nephrology or gastroenterology
If you search CPSP directory of supervisors( www.cpsp.edu.pk) there are 20 supervisors listed in Nephro and 13 in Gastro....
Your seniors should have worked up their plans a little better rather than relying on hearsay and their colleagues wisdom
Regards
Farooq

Well sir u r rite that if we search CPSP site directory of NEPHRO supervisors, 20 are listed. But the ground reality is totally different.Out of those 20, 3 gentlemen are from KSA and 2 have already retired. This directory is not updated e.g. Prof Tahir Shafi is still listed as a supervisor of NEPHRO at Shaikh Zayed Hospital even though that gentleman has retired a few months back and many of his trainees had to be accomodated by Prof Aizaz MAND sb who is now the only NEPHRO supervisor in Shaikh Zayed Hospital. That gentleman is currently supervising some 14 trainees or so...
My seniors belong to different cities of Punjab.Only 1 supervisor of NEPHRO in LHR,one in ISL and 2 in Armed forces Institue. No setas vacant at that time.A few supervisors were available in other provinces like SINDH but they were not interested to go there as the pays there are relatively low and settling there would have cost them almost all their stipend.
As for Gastroentrology, the situation is even worse.... Only 1 supervisor in LHR at SZH Prof Anwaar A Khan. The gentleman at Servises Hospital has retired. Again a few seats may have been available outside Punjab but that's not feasible..
I have personally seen over 50 candidates for interview for Gastroenterology at SZH where only 1 seat was available !!!
I'm telling all this detail 'cos I have yet to face these difficulties. Gastro, Neuro and Nephro are very hard to find atleast in Punjab. Cardio and Pulmunology more easily available.
Many Internal Medicine residents are left with no choice other than to either continue in General Medicine or to pursue a different sub-specialty simply because no supervisors are available.

yes. you are right. there are few supervisors and few training slots. the situation is that there are 3 supervisors at SIUT Karachi and 1 at JPMC. but the training there is no more than donkey work.but someone has to go through this tough process as conventional fields like Med, Surg Gynea/Obs are packed now

You do have a point here.... The people at CPSP are good at minting money out of poor trainees but their system administrators are pathetic at the best
The directories are infact not regularly updated and this lead me into believing that situation in nephro and Gastro is good
