Dear Sami
Thank you very much for an excellent introduction...
Some more information and facts regarding PM&R ( or Physiatry , as called in USA ) are as follows
1. There are around 40 Fellows of CPSP in PM&R in Pakistan at present. Thus there is a huge gap which needs to be filled
2. There are unlimited opportunities for research in different sub-fields of Rehab like Spinal Cord Injuries, Stroke Rehab, Amputee Rehab, Pediatric Disabilities and Community based Rehab. These oppurtunites mean lots of research funding as well
3. As i some times say to my Juniors.
Rehab Begins where surgery or Medicine interventions End"" Consider the examples of Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke or a case of amputation. World's Best surgical or Medical interventions cannot reverse the permanent neurological damage of Spinal Cord Injury or Stroke, or grow back even a single mm of the lost limb. It is only Rehabilitation that allows these people with major and permanent disabilities to successfully re-integrate into community as useful earning members.
4. Rehabilitation relates to all major Medical and Surgical sub-specialties. Residency training includes compulsory rotations in Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Neurology, Cardiology, Plastic surgery , Neurosurgery etc.
5. PM&R is a not a solo show .It is truly a team efforts with allied health care professionals like Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists,Speech and Language Pathologists, Rehab Nurse etc to name a few
6. PM&R is not limited to a single body part, organ or system. It is holistic in nature and takes into account the patient, his/her surroundings, family structure and community while addressing a disability. It is very different from the traditional medical model where Doctor treats a diseased person called patient with medicines or some surgical interventions without taking above mentioned factors in consideration.
those interested might find this link very helpful in answering their questions

And please do consider this specialty as a career choice for future....I made my choice six years back and Alhamdolillah it was the right one
Regards
Farooq
