Abscess is formed by the bacteria, tissue debris, dead white blood cells. The best treatment is the drainage of the abscess. Since the abscess is formed by the bacterial activity, antibiotics are prescribed to kill the bacteria involved. Drainage of abscess is necessary because these antibiotics have poor penetration power into the abscess. Once drained, antibiotics play good role in killing bacteria adherant or present adjacent to walls of the cavity containing abscess.
I hope this would help you understand.
