PakMediNet Discussion Forum : Pediatrics : common childhood infections
the two most common childhood infections are respiratiry and diarrhoeal diseases. interestingly most chilhood infections are viral and do not need antibiotics. but unfortunately doctors are giving childrens un-necessary antibiotis. e.g. this is diarrhia season and rota virus is main culprit upto 80%. which do not need antibiotics. just ORS needed.

then complain... do u think action is gonna be taken against all of them..don't u know how many quacks v have ..or don't u know how many gp's are practicing wrong.and the very disappointing thing that when u try to counsel ppl at ur level only, even they don't agree .how is a single person going to identify and then complain
this should be a campaign..there should be awareness programmes on mass levels..only try to make ppl aware can solve the problem.not to identify and complain b/c no action will be taken.

how to identify whether it is viral or bacterial? just by looking at stools?
well, to decide about the culprit bug, we must take other aspects into consideration as well.
I mean, General condition of the child, degree of pyrexia and length of the illness.
As a general rule VIRAL Gastroenteritis is usually mild( can be severe if not treated urgently and properl i.e Fluids either oral or Iv), not very high temprature and there may be history of contact. Also, seasonal factors ( Rota virus is the most common).
BACTERIAL,infections make and look realy ill.High grade pyrexia, very anorexic and miserably looking. Bloody diarrohea etc etc.
Stool Microscopy and C/S should be used in sever, doubtful cases as well as a routine if that is practically posible and reliable.
we shouldnt forget to EDUCATE the children and their Families about GOOD HYGIENE ( HAND WASHING ETC ETC)
Regards
