PakMediNet Discussion Forum : Medical Research in Pakistan : biomedical engineering

Assalam o aleikum,
I'm studying Biomedical Engineering in Denmark. I want to know how developed Pakistan is in this field? It's a very potential and highly important field for modern health care. I know India is pretty much into it, but what about Pakistan? What can be done? Anyone interested in doing anything? I've asked the ministries for education and health, but no useful response. Just a short mail saying that Biomedical Engineering is introduced at two engineering colleges.

Somebody said:
"hi!
well frankly nothing is being done due to lack of interest in this area by government .The govt and private sector is only interested in conventional surgical instruments export from sialkot and is not actually into emerging technologies and medical hi tecs manufacturing.only field service engr rle on limited scale is avaiable for graduates.
SIR SYED UNI. IN KARACHI OFFERS A BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM AND IS RECOMMENDED AFTER WHICH YOU MAY COMPETE AGAINST BSC ELECTRICAL ENGG/MSC ELECTRONICS/MSC PHYSICS CANDIDATES FOR SOME JOBS IN THIS SECTOR AND THEY MAY STAND A GOOD CHANCE FOR SELECTION IN THE ONLY BIG MULTINATIONAL i.e SIEMENS IN PAKISTAN.
ALL OTHERS LIKE GE,PHILIPS,VARIAN,TOSHIBA AND SMALL LOCAL COMPANIES ARE OWNED BY DEALERS RATHER THAN DIRECLTY BY PRINCIPALS .
SALARIES IN SIEMENS ARE VERY LOW IN BEGINNING AND JOB IS OF FIELD SERVICE WITH GOOD EXPOSURE AND LEARNING.BUT LATER ON THEY WILL GIVE YOU SOME TRAININGS ABROAD AND YOU MAY LEAVE IT FOR GOOD JOBS IN HOSPITALS OR ABROAD FOR A VERY HIGH SALARY E.G IN UK,AUSTRALIA/USA
GE IS DOING LOCAL MANUFACTURING IN INDIA BUT SIEMENS COULD NOT DO THE SAME HERE.
GE HAS ALSO NO INTEREST IN PAKISTAN DESPITE FEASIBLE ENVIRONMENT FOR INVESTMENT IN PAKISTAN AS ALL OF THESE MULTINATIONALS ARE NOT CHECKED WELL OR FORCED TO DO SOMETHING BY THE GOVT OF PAKISTAN TO PROMOTE LOCAL MANUFACTURING TO CUT DOWN ON COSTS OF EQUIPMENTAND SERVICES.
THERE IS NEED FOR FORMING A REGULATORY BODY IN MEDICAL TECH SECTOR , LIKE PTA IN TELECOM SECTOR BY GoP ,TO START INVESTEMNT IN THIS REGARD.
THE ULTIMATE SUFFRERS ARE THE POOR PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN WHO CAN NOT AFFORD TO GET COSTLY TERTIARY HELTHCARE LIKE MRI,CT,PET ANGIO ,CANCER THERAPIES ETC ".

Hi, This is Afnan, i am currenly doing my MSc Biomedical Engineering from Singapore.
Well, i came across this discussion board through a random search today, and i found it quite intrestion to see that all of you guys are so concerned as me abt the matter in Pakistan.
Lets start,as you all said the Govt not doing anything, as always, but her i guess there is no big deal the govt has to do somthing big to bring in this Biomedical thing into the Pakistani market and health care sector.
All we need to do is to make the concerned people realise that as a Qualified, certified Chartered Accountant is only applicable to sign an Audit report, similarly a Qualified, certified Biomedical Engineer should be the only person who can allow the hospital purchases, and the sales of Biomedical products from any company.
All Biomedical local or multinationals should sell their products with the apporoval of Biomedical Engineers they wud be hiring.
And the Quality assurance teams of Pakistan Medical and Dental council should indulge some Biomedical Engineers in their team to ascertain their importance in medical Business.
This calls for a simple draft or bill in Parliament.
I think that dosent sounds a big deal, well i am not sure abt the procedures behind all this,,if sombody knows, plz let me know.

Salam this is Saad Arif
and I'm doing BS in Biomedical Engineering From Sir Syed UET karachi.............
well about biomedical engineering..........let me tell u this is the most interesting and challenging field.......
and it is the need of the hour that we should maintain a department of Biomedical engineers in all Good Big Hospitals.......although in Pak..some hospitals have dept. of Biomedical engineers....Like Agha Khan etc.....but these are not enough.....
i don't think that there are more than .... 2000-2500 Biomedical engineers in Pakistan.....but still employment ratio is very low......and Salaries........are also very low...........
Biomedical engineers are treated as technicians in industry......
our govt. should take steps for this dept.
or we ppl will have to stand for our rights.....

The Field of Biomedical Engineering is combination of Biological Sciences and Engineering Sciences. Lot of reseach work is going on in developed countries in this field, it has enermous application in future therapies especially regenrative medicine. For this there is need of person who have both Engineering and Bioloigcal Sciences background or there should be collaboration between persons of bioloigcal sciences and biomedical Sciences. Some institutes in Pakistan has taken the initiative like LUMS but it is at very beginning level. Govt should call back the experts who are working in area of Biomedical Engineering and should establish institutes at least in bigger universities of Pakistan like Punjab University, Quide Azam University, Peshawar University, Karachi University and Engineering Universities of Pakistan.
i am working in area of stem cell biology, so if anybody need my help to work in area of biomedical engineering, i will look forward to help.
best regards

Dear Mr. Siyal
Lot of reseach work is going on in the field of Biomedical Engineering throughout world. This field has enermous application in future as discovery of stem cells and later start of regenrative medicine has given a boost to this field. So this is mine suggestion that you should pursue your carrier in the field of biomedical engineering.
good luck

asalam 0 alikum..
this is sam , student from NUST ( doing bs in virology and immunology) its nice to hear that the youth is concerned about the scope n importance of biomedical engineering in pakistan.. well as u said , to pass a bill in the parliament.. not a bad idea.. but the actual problem is , no one pay heed towards these issues .. even the parliamentarians are either themselves unaware of the importance of this field n the talent of their youth or they dont just care !!

Since the last 5 to 6 years discussion is going on about scope of Biomedical Engineering in Pakistan. I also studied Biomedical from abroad and nowadays (Feb. 2012) in Pakistan looking for right job but unfortunately there is no practical scope of this field yet, if someone interested in teaching then there are some possibility in Universities. Currently, it seems difficult in Pakistan, good future of BME because companies do not willing to hire BS or MS level persons because they do not want to pay good salaries. Therefore, they hire technician to do BME work.
I recommend for new students who are going to this field... "If you have really interest and willing to do research in abroad then take admission otherwise better to go in software engineering or MBA side..." Software Engineer and MBA always get a job and later reach to higher salaries... BME remains risky field until 2015... so think a lot before entering in black hole of BME.

The growth in this field lies in its Research and Development with the support of industrialization. Currently, NED University, Sir Syed University, Mehran University and Ripah University provides biomedical engineering courses. NED provides 5 years of bachelor's education (including 6-months on job training with emphasis on biological research), where as the laters provide 4 years of education.
