Chi square is a statistical test that is used when you want to test for association between two categorical variables. For example, if you have a group of males and females and some of them are diseased and others are not and you want to see if disease has an association with sex (the occurs more frequently in one sex) or not (both sexes being equally susceptible) one of the tests that you can employ is Chi square. Computation details can be found in any basic book of statistics.
