USMLE needs a strong committment and long hours of study. It consists of two steps; one and two. Step two is further divided into two components, CK(Clinical Knowledge) and CS(Clinical Skills). Step 3 is for state licensing examination but being FMG(foreign medical graduate) one has to take in order to secure a position since there is too much competition.
Step one is basic sciences. Best is to start with step one. Most of the people now a days study Kaplan series for step one. Start with it and do MCQs after going through the text. Once you are doing MCQs then get back to text again and it would be your own self judgement that what is the most relevant text material you need to retain. Do MCQs as much as you can. Kaplan Q bank, Q book, USMLE world. These are enough. First AID for step one is also good start with it and the more effort you will put into it the more you get.
Besides preparing for USMLE, if you have done postgraduation its good. If you are a medical student then you should apply for electives in USA because you need to work on you LORs ( Letter of Recommendations ) right away since in medical school it is the best time to work on it. Let me know if you need some more guidance, I would be glad to help.
Regards,

There are some programs which offer electives for medical school students, you have to search the program. There are few things to keep in mind. Now a days, the trend of doing electives is increasing day by day so you have to contact the program at least six months prior to your intended date. Some programs may ask you about the step one; so think about taking your step one. If you get enough luck to have elective spot in some program its well and good. Search Mount sinai Florida, Baylor TX and browse the usmle forum and some websites. You will get very descriptive information about everything and even experience of people who are doing electives too. Good luck.....

If you are interested in doing a research elective (not clinical - there will be no patient contact) at Johns Hopkins, send me an e-mail.
