PakMediNet Discussion Forum : Medicine : WESTERN BLOT or PCR for diagnosing HIV
I just wanna confirm whether PCR is a better confirmatory test than Western Blot for diagnosing HIV.As far as I know,PCR can even detect HIV during the first month of Acute Illness while Western Blot, which detects antibodies against HIV antigens, gives positive results late in the course of illness.Senior colleagues are requested to plz help me in this regard.THANX

i think PCR is more accurate way to check the presence of HIV in body. because you can even detect a single particle now from blood and also quantify the amount of viruses now by real time PCR.
as compared to PCR the western blotting is length procedure and the accuracy is not as much as PCR. i think PCR is the Gold standard test for HIV.
other suggestions will also be welcomed
